This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Staff Surveyor to provide technical expertise and oversight.  Our ideal candidate has excellent technical surveyor skills.  The position is well suited to someone that enjoys being the task leader on bridge projects, serving as a mentor for junior staff development, and implementing our design quality control process.  Our ideal candidate is self-motivated, takes pride in their work, and is eager to learn new skills and grow our presence in Ohio and Kentucky.

Job Description:

You will serve as a technical resource in the firm’s survey practice, performing and checking ROW plans, boundary resolution, survey crew scheduling and coordinating closely with multiple disciplines within Compass, as well as learning new skills and mentoring future additional staff.

 

  1. Review field surveys, survey equipment operation, data collection and documentation, and survey data processing and calculations.

  2. Right of Way plan development

  3. Right of Way basemap development and container files creation

  4. Proposed Right of Way design

  5. Oversee and review the accuracy of collected data to ensure it aligns with the project requirements. Identify any discrepancies or errors and take corrective actions as needed.

  6. Oversee the survey technicians, survey crews, including rod persons, instrument operators and other field staff to ensure efficient and accurate data collection. Provide guidance and supervision to junior team members when necessary.

  7. Review and perform basic to intermediate surveying calculations, such as determining distances, coordinates, and angles. Use this information to help create maps, boundaries, and other survey-related documents.

  8. Review and perform boundary surveys and mark property lines, boundaries, or construction stakeout points for building projects, utilities, or roadways. Ensure accuracy in the placement of markers.

  9. Assist in training junior staff, such as survey technicians, field crew members, by teaching them proper surveying techniques, safety practices and equipment usage.

  10. Coordinate with rental equipment, maintenance of traffic sub-consultants, flagging, coordination, and material ordering.

  11. Help plan and execute survey tasks based on project specifications. Collaborate with senior surveyors and engineers to ensure that the survey plan meets client needs and project objectives.

  12. Communicate directly with clients, project managers, and other stakeholders to provide updates on progress, clarify survey requirements, and address any concerns. Prepare and present survey reports as required.

  13. Check basemaps and plans created by junior staff to ensure compliance with regulations, codes and industry standards.

  14. Collaborate with other departments to ensure smooth task and project execution

  15. Provide coaching and mentoring to junior staff, fostering their technical and professional growth.

  16. Written and Verbal communication with clients and review agencies

  17. Attend client meetings

  18. Performs other related duties as assigned

 

 What You Bring:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Civil Engineering (or approved equivalent for PS)

  • Licensed Professional Surveyor in Ohio or Kentucky (or ability to obtain with existing experience and/or additional experience)

  • ODOT Right of Way Designer Prequalification (or ability to obtain with 3 months)

  • ODOT Right of Way Reviewer Prequalification (or ability to obtain in future)

  • 5+ years of experience

  • Experience working on ODOT or KYTC projects

  • Proven hands-on experience in all aspects of survey and ROW projects

  • Experience preparing and checking reports and plan packages

  • Detail oriented person capable of leading survey tasks and being the surveyor of record for ROW projects

  • Experience operating robotic total stations and GPS

  • Experience in topographic line coding per KYTC and/or ODOT standards. 

  • Experience using data processing and CAD software, Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD and/or OpenRoads Designer (preferred)

  • Experience with topographic surveys, setting project control, route surveys, ALTA surveys and boundary surveys

  • Willingness to mentor less experienced staff

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Cooperative, team-oriented spirit

  • Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record. Must have a satisfactory background test.
